Principal, Loretta Gray talks about the positive experiences Accelerated Reader has created for her children and staff:.
“I love Accelerated Reader. It makes reading more enjoyable. My favourite author is JK Rowling!”
– Eleanor Costello, 2nd Class
Accelerated Reader has created many positive experiences from children and staff, and it has certainly enhanced the reading culture in the school. Our Board of Management invest in library materials every year to ensure we have a current stock of suitable books. Teachers incorporate library time into every school day. All children read independently at their level and teachers ensure they progress through these levels. It’s an enjoyable approach to guided reading for all.
“I love Accelerated Reader because it motivates me to read more and to get to my target. It is something I enjoy doing.”
– Odhrán O Connor, 6th Class
Teachers also emphasise that reading is noncompetitive. There are incentives for children when they read their target and teachers have also implemented a Millionaire Reader incentive scheme. This is hugely motivating especially for the older children. And while younger children are still developing their ‘word attack’ skills, Accelerated Reader also develops their comprehension skills simultaneously. This makes the programme so worthwhile.
“I am enjoying Accelerated Reader so far. I am learning lots of new vocabulary from fascinating books. My favourite author is Michael Morpurgo.”
– Thomas Deely, 5th Class
Ballyvaughan NS is a small, two-teacher school in North Clare. We have been implementing Accelerated Reader here since 2014. All children from 1st to 6th Class are registered on the programme.
